Highlands Ranch hires boys coach Caton
Bob Caton, a longtime figure in Colorado boys basketball, has accepted the head coaching position at Class 5A Highlands Ranch. The former Colorado State player, who coached at Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, leaves Aurora Central for the Falcons, who compete in the Continental League. Caton is credited for reviving the Aurora Central program, which over the past three seasons was a combined 76-3 and entered the big-school tournament undefeated three times. The Trojans were runner-up to East in March.
Buddy Lazier to drive No. 99 in Indy 500
Vail’s Buddy Lazier, who ranks third all-time in career earnings at the Indianapolis 500, will team up with owner Sam Schmidt in his entry into the 91st edition of the Brickyard race. Lazier will drive the No. 99 Sam Schmidt Motorsports car. Lazier, the 1996 Indy 500 winner, has career earnings of $5,054,731 in 14 starts at the race.
Minnesota standout signs with CSU
The Colorado State women’s basketball team signed Lauren Young, a standout from Edina (Minn.) High School, to a letter of intent. The 6-foot-2 power forward was an all-state selection her senior season after averaging 16.7 points and 8.9 rebounds.
Adams State named Mark Murdock, formerly with Eastern New Mexico University and Eastfield (Texas) College, its new men’s basketball coach.
Eagles take on Blazers in CHL playoffs
The Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League will face the Oklahoma City Blazers in the Northern Conference semifinals after the Eagles eliminated the Youngstown Steelhounds with a 6-1 victory Tuesday. The series begins 7:05 p.m. Friday at Budweiser Events Center.
Johnston headlines Loveland boxing event
Denver’s Stevie Johnston, (40-4-1, 18 knockouts), a former two-time WBA lightweight title-holder, will fight Luis Ernesto Jose (27-4-2, 24 KOs) of the Dominican Republic May 18 at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland. The undercard will include Adrian Mora (18-0-1), a welterweight from Thornton.
Fox Hollow to host women’s qualifier
Fox Hollow Golf Course in Lakewood will host the Colorado qualifier for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Pub Links Championship on May 29. The national championship is scheduled for June 18-23 at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Ky.
