Jaret Wright isn’t out of the Baltimore Orioles’ starting rotation yet, although the right-hander didn’t sound optimistic Wednesday when asked to report on the condition of his ailing shoulder.
“It only hurts when I throw,” Wright said.
Wright left Tuesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers with stiffness in his right shoulder. It was not a good sign, given that he missed more than half the 2005 season with a right shoulder strain and was sidelined for parts of the 2000, 2001 and 2002 seasons with shoulder problems.
Wright was examined by Dr. Andrew Casgarea, the team physician, who said that while Wright was still experiencing stiffness in the shoulder, the pain was “not acute.” He listed the pitcher as day to day.
Mariners: Seattle left-hander Arthur Rhodes has a torn ligament in his pitching elbow and is considering ligament replacement surgery that would keep him out for the rest of the season.
Team medical director Dr. Edward Khalfayan said Rhodes has a choice between pitching with the tear or having Tommy John surgery. Rhodes is expected to get a second opinion.
Cardinals: Third baseman Scott Rolen remained out of the lineup because of back spasms.
Rolen began having back problems in his hotel room Tuesday and was a late scratch from the Cardinals’ lineup that night.
With the Cardinals having a day off today at home, manager Tony La Russa rested Rolen again Wednesday.
Angels: Los Angeles right-hander Jered Weaver, recovering from biceps tendinitis, struck out seven batters in seven innings in a rehab start with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.
Weaver threw 62 of 93 pitches for strikes. He allowed three hits and two walks, and his pitches topped out at 93 mph.
Twins: Needing bullpen depth, Minnesota recalled left-hander Glen Perkins from Triple-A Rochester and optioned catcher Chris Heintz to the minor-league team.
Yankees: New York starter Mike Mussina left Wednesday’s game at Minnesota three batters into the third inning because of a strained left hamstring.
