DENVER-

Bruce L. McCloskey, director of the Colorado Division Wildlife for three years, is retiring at the end of May after 33 years with the department.

“This was a very difficult decision, but all good things eventually come to an end,” McCloskey, 54, said. “Working for the Colorado Division of Wildlife was a dream come true for me. This is the work I always wanted to do.”

The 1974 graduate of Colorado State University began working for the agency that same year and held jobs as an area wildlife manager, regional manager, hunter education coordinator and head of the habitat section.

He was deputy director for 17 years.

No replacement has been named yet, said DOW spokesman Tyler Baskfield. In the past, directors were selected after a committee reviewed candidates.

McCloskey noted that demands on the agency have grown along with the state’s population, requiring that it aggressively research potential problems and preserve wildlife habitat.

“The DOW is working hard to do what’s best for wildlife, but the task is not getting any easier.”

Tom Burke, chairman of the Colorado Wildlife Commission, said: “Bruce has dedicated his career to the Colorado Division of Wildlife. He’ll be greatly missed.”

McCloskey said he will eventually live abroad and travel the oceans on a boat with his wife, Bonnie.
