VAIL, Colo.-

History is catching up with Vail’s slowest lift, and opinions are divided.

The company is replacing the Highline lift, an old-fashioned, fixed-grip two seater, which by definition is slower than the high-speeds that dominate America’s most popular ski resort.

Some like to give their knees a break. Others enjoy meeting strangers with a cry of “single?”

Mary Kopf of Glenwood Springs fears installing a high-speed will bring a surge of skiers to the area’s three bump runs.

John Smith of Denver said he’d rather be skiing than sitting on a lift.
