PEETZ, Colo.-
A 3-year-old boy died after falling into an abandoned cistern during a family picnic near this northeastern Colorado town, the Logan County sheriff said Monday.
The boy was reported missing about 7:10 p.m. Sunday during the gathering on private land, and authorities found him nearly two hours later, Sheriff Brett Powell said. The boy was pronounced dead at 10:15 p.m. at the Sterling Regional Medical Center.
The boy’s name has not been released, but Powell said his family lives near Peetz, about 130 miles northeast of Denver. He said investigators were interviewing witnesses, and an autopsy had been scheduled for Wednesday.
