Susie Ida Quartey was ordered Monday to undergo competency evaluations before facing charges in the death of her 3-year-old daughter.

Quartey has been in the Arapahoe County Jail since the death of her daughter, Jolyn Torpoh, on April 7.

A 34-year-old native of Ghana, she is headed to the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo, and is scheduled to reappear in court June 15.

Defense attorney Thomas Miller told a district court judge that Quartey needs “hospitalization to piece her life back together.”

Quartey has been charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon, felony sexual assault on a child and misdemeanor child abuse.

Quartey told police she was carrying Jolyn on her back outside their Aurora home when they fell onto rocks.

Police said the girl was battered with pieces of a metal towel rack and a coat hanger before she died.
