Good show

Filmmaker Lourdes Portillo, whose documentary, “Las Madres: The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo,” was nominated for an Academy Award, is the Metropolitan State College Richard T. Castro Distinguished Visiting Professor for 2007 and will fulfill her duties this week.

Her first appearance is at a reception that begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Museo de las Americas; on Wednesday she will be on campus for two functions that are open to the public.

First is a question-and-answer session with Portillo and the showing of two of her films, “La Ofrenda: The Days of the Dead” and “Seniorita Extraviada, Missing Young Woman.” It begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Starz FilmCenter at the Tivoli Student Union. At 11:30, the scene shifts to Turnhalle, also in the Tivoli center. There, Portillo will deliver a lunch- eon address and introduce her Oscar-nominated documentary.

Dads who set an example

Robert Cohen, chief executive officer of the IMA Financial Group; ex-District Attorney Norm Early; and Columbine Health Plan President David McReynolds have been named Fathers of the Year by the Father’s Day Council and the American Diabetes Association. They were honored last week at a reception at the Grand Hyatt Denver’s Pinnacle Club.

Plans for the second Janet’s Camp benefit will be off to a sparkling start, thanks to Thursday’s Campy Couture cocktail party and fashion show at Saks Fifth Avenue. Champagne and martinis will be served at the 5:30 p.m. event emceed by Sassy 107.1-FM morning show host Gloria Neal; a host of local celebrities will model attire suited for the June 9 event held at Janet Elway’s Cherry Hills Village home. Proceeds go toward summer “camperships” available through the YMCA of Metropolitan Denver … Temple Grandin, a Colorado State University professor and renowned animal behaviorist, discusses her success in living with autism April 30 when Sewall Child Development Center has its Champions for Children Luncheon at the Four Points Sheraton. Grandin has written several books, appeared on such TV shows as “The View” and “Larry King Live,” and is considered the pre-eminent designer of livestock handling systems. Law,” “The New Adventures of Old Christine”) is the keynote speaker at A Chance to Believe, a May 1 luncheon put on by the Volunteers of America Guild. Proceeds go to Brandon Center and Theodora House, which offer shelter to female victims of domestic violence.
