University of Colorado at Boulder police arrested a student after finding guns and ammunition in his dorm room, authorities said Friday.
Matthew Furnish was arrested Thursday night for investigation of unlawful possession of deadly weapons on campus and unlawful conduct on public property, said Cmdr. Brad Wiesley of the CU Police Department.
“There is no indication he made any threats,” Wiesley said.
Furnish told officers he brought a shotgun and pistol to school on Monday so that he could go target shooting with friends over the weekend, Wiesley said.
Authorities had received an anonymous tip about a student having weapons in his room at Kittredge Residence Hall, Wiesley said.
Campus police discovered a .40-caliber Glock handgun, a 12-gauge Remington shotgun, several hundred rounds of ammunition, magazine clips for weapons and a 12-inch knife, he said.
Furnish was taken to the Boulder County Jail.
CU officials suspended him and banned him from entering school property, Wiesley said.
CU bans students from having firearms on campus unless they register the weapons with the Police Department for shooting sports, hunting and target shooting. Under this program, Furnish had registered a rifle other than the weapons seized from his room, Wiesley said.
