Two 14-year-old boys were arrested on charges of threatening a “large-scale shooting” at a high school in the northwest Denver area, the Adams County sheriff’s office said Tuesday.
Investigators arrested the boys Monday at Clear Lake Middle School, where they are students, after they learned of the alleged threat, sheriff’s Sgt. Candi Baker said.
The threat was aimed at Ranum High School, Baker said.
She said investigators believed the threat was credible, but she declined to say why or what the motive may have been.
The case was still under investigation. The boys were being held in a juvenile detention facility.
In a separate case, a judge set bail Tuesday at $25,000 for a 17-year-old suspected of setting off a small explosion outside a high school south of Denver on Friday, the eighth anniversary of the Columbine shootings.
A hearing was set for May 8 to discuss specific charges. The teen’s name was not released. It was not immediately known if he had posted bail.
The explosion occurred outside Ponderosa High School near Parker, about 15 miles south of Denver, prompting officials to evacuate the school and call off classes for the day. No injuries or damage were reported.
Authorities said they arrested a Ponderosa junior who had chemicals in a backpack that “could have been mixed to create another small sound-making device.”
No details have been released.
