A Saturday evening crash on westbound Interstate 70 didn’t send anyone to the hospital, but the van that veered off the highway left the remnants of a historic Colorado road sign in its wake.
Lower Valley Fire District crews responded to the crash on Interstate 70 near mile marker 231 — just west of the Colorado-Utah border — at 6:13 p.m. Saturday, . is the last in Utah before drivers reach Colorado, , according to state highway maps.
“Upon arrival, crews found a vehicle off the roadway with significant damage,” agency officials wrote on social media. “Unfortunately, the vehicle’s path also claimed a local landmark — the ‘Leaving Colorado’ sign.”
The driver escaped the crashed van before firefighters arrived on scene and declined to be taken to the hospital, according to Lower Valley Fire District officials. The driver told first responders that the sprinter van pulling a cargo trailer blew a tire on the interstate, causing the driver to lose control and leave the highway, crashing into the sign.
“RIP,” fire officials said of the Colorado sign. “You served travelers well.”
The sign faced westbound drivers heading into Utah.
Colorado State Patrol troopers also responded to the crash, according to fire officials.
