Broomfield – The official diagnosis for the Broomfield girls soccer team should read: healthy.
A clean bill of health for the Class 4A defending state champions could spell trouble for a deep field that may have already dismissed the Eagles.
Coach Jim Davidson’s crew played possibly its best match of the season, posting a 6-0 rout of Thompson Valley on Thursday at Elizabeth Kennedy Stadium in a pivotal Northern League game.
“We are in that place where we need to have results,” Davidson said. “We have sort of that playoff feel right now, and in order for us to qualify we have to have results, and it was good to see that energy tonight.”
With just one week left in the regular season, Broomfield (7-3-2 in league, 7-3-3 overall) is in good shape to nab one of the seven playoff spots awarded to the 15-team league. Thompson Valley (8-3-1, 9-3-1), enjoying it’s most successful campaign in a long time, has lost two in a row and has No. 2 Niwot looming Saturday.
Most of the Broomfield energy came from all-state forward Amanda Foulk. The University of Colorado-bound senior netted three goals and an assist – and could be a key piece of Broomfield’s repeat puzzle.
“I have a lot of faith in this team, and we really do have amazing talent,” said Foulk, who missed a handful of games early on after reconstructive ACL surgery in November. “Mentally we just weren’t there at the beginning of the season, and we are peaking at the prime time of the season, and hopefully we can carry the energy from this game into the next.
“Every game from here on out is a playoff game.”
Foulk’s first goal was a beauty. She shook off two defenders, then beat keeper Ashlea Boerger to the far post. She completed the hat trick in the 47th minute, taking a brilliant through ball from Deborah Davies.
Broomfield, the preseason No. 2 team in The Denver Post and currently unranked, also got goals from Danielle Birdsall, Tressa Thompson and Denise Cavalli.
“What our team needs to learn is just how to play at this speed,” Thompson Valley coach Nate Hancock said. “There was one team here tonight that wanted to win the ballgame and they showed it.”
