GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.-
Two high school students were suspended after saying they were the ones who had distributed fliers touting crystal methamphetamine, school officials said Wednesday.
The Fruita Monument High School students came forward to school officials, Mesa County School District 51 spokesman Jeff Kirtland said.
The fliers started showing up on windshields at Mesa Mall, at Wal-Mart, and at Grand Junction and Fruita Monument high schools Tuesday. The fliers read “METH” in capital letters, followed with the phrases “One man’s risk is another man’s benefit” and “Trusted and Used since 1887.”
Police said Wednesday that they considered the fliers a hoax. The businesses were not pursuing trespassing charges.
“This is a pretty foolish and abhorrent message but it is protected by free speech,” police spokeswoman Linda Bowman said.
