Oakland designated hitter Mike Piazza is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks with a strained right shoulder injured Wednesday night when he dove into third base in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid being tagged out.
“It’s frustrating,” Piazza said. “I felt like I was starting to swing the bat a little better and it’s a tough setback. It’s really frustrating.”
Piazza, who signed as a free agent after spending the previous 14 seasons in the National League, is batting .282 after going 2-for-3 in the Athletics’ 6-4 loss to the Red Sox.
Giants: Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda was arrested after a California Highway Patrol officer pulled him over for speeding and discovered drugs in the car Tuesday in Cordelia, Calif.
While approaching the vehicle, “the officer smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the car,” CHP Sgt. Wulf Corrington said Wednesday.
The CHP officer arrested Cepeda after finding a “usable” amount of a white-powder substance that likely was methamphetamine or cocaine, Corrington said. The officer also found marijuana and a syringe, he added.
Cepeda, 69, was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance, along with possession of a hypodermic needle or syringe and possession of marijuana, both misdemeanors.
Mariners: Felix Hernandez, who strained his forearm April 18, will not start at Yankee Stadium on Friday as anticipated. The right-hander is tentatively scheduled to pitch May 9 at Detroit.
Indians: Major League Baseball disagreed with Cleveland’s argument that umpires should not have added a run three innings after it was initially waved off in Saturday’s 7-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.
The run, which scored on a sacrifice fly in the third inning before the Indians could turn a double play, was later added in the sixth inning. MLB chief operating officer Bob DuPuy decided that because the umpires’ mistake did not involve a judgment call, and because there is nothing in the Official Baseball Rules to address when umpires can make a correction, the umps can act at their own discretion.
