Getting your player ready...

Four out of five doctors surveyed will tell you that it’s probably a lot safer to live vicariously through the extraordinary celluloid adventures featured at this weekend’s third annual Boulder Adventure Film Festival than to actually go out and try them for yourself. And even if walking a tightrope more than 1,000 feet off the ground (as Dean Potter does) or swimming the entire Hudson River to raise awareness for water pollution (like Chris Swain) or posting a first ascent of Eldorado Canyon’s hardest rock climb (too late, unless your name is Matt Segal) sounds enticing to you, you’re still better off watching a film about it first, maybe even signing up for Friday’s Adventure Filmmaker’s Workshop to get a better perspective on just how gnarly these undertakings (and the filming of them) really are. With 22 new films selected for screening at the Boulder Theater from more than 150 entries, the festival includes a kids and family matinee at 4 p.m. Saturday and two evenings of films beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. As for that fifth doctor, well, his name is Dr. David Suzuki, and he’s got a message of his own – what it means to be fully human. But you’ll have to see his film, “Suzuki Speaks,” to hear it.
