A Commerce City teenager tried to climb between the cars of a slow-moving freight train this morning when he slipped and fell, severely injuring his leg.

Commerce City Police Det. Mike Saunders said the boy was apparently walking to Adams County High School when, rather than wait for the train to pass, he climbed onto the train near East 69th Avenue and Elm Street, just a block from the school.

Saunders said the boy fell and the train hit his leg. He was taken to Children’s Hospital in Denver.

Saunders said the train operator was not at fault, that it appears to be the fault of the boy, whose identity was not released.
