Search boats scoured the east side of Cherry Creek Reservoir late Wednesday in search of a 60-year-old man who fell off a sailboat and was believed drowned, South Metro Fire and Rescue officials said. The search was called off after more than two hours and was expected to resume this morning, officials said.

The man, who was not identified, was sailing with four friends when about 8 p.m., as he was adjusting the sail, a gust of wind blew him over the deck, South Metro Fire spokesman Andy Lyon said.

“At this point, there is almost no hope that he’s coming out of there alive,” Lyon said, two hours into the search.

Divers from the South Metro, West Metro and Westminster fire departments searched the reservoir but were not being deployed into the water because of the dangers of diving at night, Lyon said.
