Getting your player ready...

“Your thoughtful, perceptive column, ‘Racism shadows Bonds,’ hit a screaming line drive past all the outstretched gloves of those defending and denigrating slugger Barry Bonds.

“Perhaps Bonds will be given a chance to break Hank Aaron’s record while facing Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling in an interleague game. If Bonds were to hit No. 756 off Schilling, that would be poetic justice.”

Patrick, Laramie

Kiz: By suggesting Bonds has replaced O.J. Simpson as the No. 1 sports figure who represents the racial divide in America, I heard from many angry white and black readers, all shouting there was not an ounce of prejudice in them. Nevertheless, when an athlete is on trial in the court of public opinion, whether the charges are cheating or murder, the racial makeup of the jury matters more than many of us would like to admit.

Saving soccer

“How can you say David Beckham is not an amazing soccer player? He has been starting for Real Madrid, currently one of the top teams in the world. Granted, expectations that he will dominate MLS in America might be overwrought, but … I don’t think there’s one coach in MLS, Fernando Clavijo of the Colorado Rapids included, who wouldn’t have Beckham in the starting 11.”

Ishai, Philadelphia

Kiz: Does Beckham have game? Sure. But there’s a big difference between being a star and a savior for American soccer. What I’m trying to say is: Posh Spice can sing my national anthem any time. But nobody confuses her with Aretha Franklin.

Music to Mom’s ears

“Your mom rocks!”

John Tesh, world-famous keyboardist

Kiz: Gee, John, I didn’t realize you had met Bonnie. On behalf of my mother and hip mommas everywhere, thanks for the props. I’m sure your new CD will make a great gift. Nothing says “Happy Mother’s Day” quite like music that’s the perfect accompaniment to holding the telephone until a sales representative can take my call.

Holliday pay

“Keep tweaking the Rockies. I love it. It’s pathetic to see the truly legitimate young talent – from outfielder Matt Holliday to shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and third baseman Garrett Atkins – being developed year after year, when we all know when it comes time to pay them, they will be gone.

John, disgruntled ticket-buyer

Kiz: Do you really think Holliday hired super agent Scott Boras to finish in last place for the rest of his baseball life?

Voice of reason

“I leave the country for a few weeks, come back and Z560 is a Christian radio station? What the heck happened? Where will morning sports-talk host Tim Neveritt end up?”

Erik, grieving radio fan

Kiz: A smart station manager would get my old friend “Never Right” and me back in the radio game in a big way. Put us in, coach, we’re ready to play.

Parting shot

And today’s parting shot is taken at Bonds, by a baseball fan who won’t be cheering when the San Francisco slugger’s next homer clears the fence.

“The issue for my friends and me, when it comes to Bonds, is one of attitude toward fans, players and the game of baseball. It isn’t even the arrogance, but the chip on the shoulder. Great players who helped break down racial barriers – Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays, to name just two – were characterized by a joy and love of the game.”

Colin, Littleton
