Aurora Fire Chief Casey Jones retired Friday following allegations he had an affair with an assistant city attorney assigned to his office and played golf on city time.
The city authorized an outside investigation into the chief’s activities in March, and he was placed on paid administrative leave last month.
Jones was named chief in 2002. A statement from the department credited him with a program to make sure new firefighters are cross-trained as paramedics. He also was instrumental in consolidating the 911 police and fire dispatch center.
Deputy Chief Dan Martinelli will serve as acting fire chief while Aurora seeks to fill the job permanently, City Manager Ron Miller said.
Jones will continue to work on a temporary contractual basis to help with projects he spearheaded, such as the organization of the public safety communications center and the upcoming ambulance transport contract. The work should be done by November, according to a statement from the city.
