Tim Boron stopped 39 shots and the Colorado Eagles scored twice in the second and third periods in a 4-0 win over the Laredo Bucks in Game 5 of the Central Hockey League’s President’s Cup Finals in Texas on Sunday. The Eagles will take a 3-2 series lead back to Loveland for Wednesday’s Game 6. Boron has three shutouts in the playoffs, tying a CHL record. Seth Leonard, Riley Nelson and Scott Polaski each had a goal and an assist for Colorado.
Mesa State ousted in baseball regional
Cal State Los Angeles swept two games from visiting Mesa State, 11-0 and 8-3, to win the NCAA Division II West Regional, earning a spot in the Division II championships that begin Friday in Montgomery, Ala.
Mesa State rallied for a 9-8 victory over Chico State late Saturday to reach Sunday’s championship round undefeated in the double-elimination tournament, needing only one win. But Cal State L.A. got a complete-game shutout from freshman pitcher Tommy Elrod in the first game. In the second game, Mesa State led 2-0 in the first inning. But Cal State L.A. reliever Sean O’Leary pitched eight innings as the Golden Eagles rallied with 11 hits.
Zywicki scores lacrosse tourney winner
Canada edged Iroquois Nationals 15-14 in overtime Sunday to capture the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Former Denver Outlaw Jeff Zywicki scored the game-winner for the team coached by Gary Gait, coach of the Colorado Mammoth.
The Mammoth’s Tom Ethington, also of the Outlaws, scored a late goal to help the United States to a 17-10 win over England in the bronze-medal game. The U.S. turned an 8-6 halftime lead into a blowout after it scored six unanswered goals to begin the second half.
Evergreen’s Flater adds to USTA titles
Evergreen’s Roald Flater on Saturday won the U.S. Tennis Association National Hardcourt Doubles Championship at Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., with partner Graydon Nichols of California. Flater a week earlier won the USTA Indoor 80 singles championship at Vancouver, Wash., defeating Florida’s Bob Meyerdirks.
