Matt Call, a former player at the University of Colorado, was one of 12 players who qualified for the sectional round from two U.S. Golf Association U.S. Open local qualifiers Monday.
Call, a two-time Colorado Golf Association stroke play champion who played in the 1999 U.S. Open, shot a tournament-low 69 to medal at the Colorado Golf Club qualifier in Parker. He was joined by five other qualifiers, including Bill Loeffler of Castle Rock, a three-time Colorado Open winner, who shot 71; Zen Brown, a sophomore on the Colorado State team, 72; Jeffrey Koprivetz, Denver, 72; Tom Glissmeyer, Colorado Springs, 73; and Jeff Philippe, Parker, 74.
At the Collindale Golf Course qualifier in Fort Collins, Dale Smigelsky of Fort Collins and Shane Wahbeh of Aurora each shot 67 to top the field. The four other qualifiers were determined by a playoff and included defending CGA match play champion Aaron Weston of Lone Tree; Jason Preeo, Denver; 2004 CGA stroke play champ Drew Stoltz, Fort Collins; and Thomas Noonan, Boulder.
U.S. Open sectional qualifying tournaments will include one at Columbine Country Club in Littleton on June 4.
Otero baseball coach steps down
Otero Junior College in La Junta announced that baseball coach Gary Addington will step down after nine years at the helm to become athletic coordinator. He will be replaced by Chris Carrillo, a current assistant coach.
UNC wrestling signs six
The University of Northern Colorado wrestling team signed six athletes for next season: Brandon Kammerzell, a state champion from Eaton High School; Justin Gaethje, who won two state titles at Stafford High School in Arizona; Troy Kessell, a two-time state champ from Hermiston (Ore.) High School; Brett Bahe, a three-time state champ from Goodland, Kan., whose brother Blayze is a junior on the UNC team; Derek Koehn from Pittsburg (Kan.) High School; and Tanner Weiks from Littlerock, Wash.
