Broncos receiver David Kircus appeared in Arapahoe County court this morning to be advised of assault charges against him.
A temporary restraining order was issued against Kircus, forbidding him to have any contact with the man he is accused of assaulting. He also is prohibited from drinking alcohol.
Kircus returned to the Broncos’ camp this morning after court and participated in practice.
Kircus, 27, is charged with felony assault following a fistfight early Sunday morning. According to a police report, Kircus was invited by a female friend to a party Saturday night in the 8200 block of South Krameria Street.
Kircus got into an argument with the woman and was asked to leave several time by the party host, Jeff Krieger, who owned the home. The two went outside and got into a fistfight, according to the report.
Kircus allegedly struck Krieger, then drove away in a black truck, the report stated. Krieger was hospitalized for minor surgery and broken bones in his face and was released Monday morning.
Kircus turned himself in to authorities on Monday and was charged. He was released after paying $6,000 bail.
Kircus was acquired last year by the Broncos, who list him as a back-up receiver. His contract pays him the NFL’s 4th-year minimum salary of $510,000.
Bronco coach Mike Shanahan told the media Monday that if Kircus is convicted of the charge, the Broncos will release him.
He said Kircus’ version of the altercation was considerably different from that told by witnesses who were at the party.
“You don’t know if a guy’s defending himself, or the guy punches you, or throws a punch and does hit you,” Shanahan said.
“Let’s find out if he’s guilty or not,” Shanahan said. “If he’s guilty, then he’ll pay the penalty. If he’s not, then he’ll be with us.”
Kircus’ case was remanded to Arapahoe County District Court, with his next hearing scheduled for Friday.
