Peterson drives Rapids’ U.S. Open Cup win

Colorado’s Jacob Peterson scored a breakaway goal in stoppage time to give the Rapids a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake in the qualifying stage of the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Peterson scored on an assist from Connor Casey in the 93rd minute. Peterson also scored unassisted in the 48th minute. Salt Lake’s Chris Klein tied the game in the 64th.

The Rapids next move to the round of 16, to be played July 10.

DU women 22nd at NCAA golf championships

The University of Denver women’s golf team tumbled from contention at the NCAA Championships, dropping from sixth place to 22nd after the second day at the Legends Course at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Emily Hoeper, in sixth place after the first round, dropped to 63rd after shooting an 83. Freshman Stephanie Sherlock withdrew because of a stomach virus.

Two-time defending champion Duke took a seven-stroke lead after the second round, and Purdue’s Christel Boeljon shot a 3-under 69 in windy conditions to top the individual leaderboard.

Derek Fribbs, a sophomore at Douglas County High School, shot a final-round 74 to medal at the American Junior Golf Association Medicus Preseason Junior in Albuquerque last week. Fribbs, who shot an opening round 66, topped a national field of 84 players at the 6,881-yard University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.

CU’s Milewski eliminated from tennis tourney

Martina Banikova of Mississippi State eliminated Colorado’s Monica Milewski 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 in the first round of the NCAA women’s tennis championship in Athens, Ga.

Milewski, ranked No. 38, fell to No. 46 Banikova for the second time this season. Milewski is the first CU woman to qualify for the national singles tournament in 22 years, and the fourth in school history.

Radford’s Martin Sayer, ranked No. 76, knocked out No. 16 Adam Holmstrom of the University of Denver in the NCAA men’s first round 7-5, 7-6 in Athens. Holmstrom, a junior, holds the DU record for most career wins with 83.

Cryer nominated for national lacrosse honor

Former Cherry Creek High School standout Caroline Cryer, a junior attacker on the Duke women’s lacrosse team, is one four players nominated for the Honda Sports Lacrosse Award, awarded annually to the nation’s top female collegiate lacrosse player.

Cryer is also a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy, the Heisman Trophy of women’s lacrosse.

Adams State offensive lineman Chris Lundin is among the 45 players on the Team USA roster for the 2007 World Championship of American Football in July.

Wednesday’s game between the Colorado Springs Sky Sox and the visiting Fresno Grizzlies was postponed because of rain and will be made up today as part of a doubleheader.

The Sky Sox will start Rodrigo Lopez (0-0, 1.93 ERA) in Game 1 and Oscar Rivera (0-1, 9.00) in Game 2.
