A 17-year-old Aurora girl drowned Monday evening, possibly trying to save her 11-year-old brother in a condominium swimming pool.

The brother was on life-support at Medical Center of Aurora Monday night. A neighbor at Raintree East Condominiums saw the pair unconscious in the pool at about 5:30 p.m., according to Aurora police.

Authorities did not release their names Monday.

“The boy was wearing swim trunks, and the girl was wearing street clothes,” said Detective Bob Friel.

“One could speculate she was trying to save her brother and jumped in, but we don’t have any witnesses, so it’s only speculation.”

A security guard at the condo complex checked the pool at 5 p.m. and saw nothing.

The mother and father were at work at the time. They were contacted and told to come home because of an emergency with their children, then told the circumstance when they arrived, Friel said.

“They were so distraught, wailing and crying,” Friel said. “It was heartbreaking.”

The family lives one door down from the pool.
