BOULDER, Colo.-

A 65-year-old Littleton man collapsed and died while participating in the Bolder Boulder Monday, the first death in the race’s 29-year history.

Ross “Jack” J. Lowe was identified by the Boulder County coroner’s office. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.

Race organizers said Lowe collapsed at 19th Street and Balsam, midway through the 10-kilometer course at about 9:45 a.m. Paramedics on bicycles saw Lowe fall and were able to treat him in less than a minute with a defibrillator and breathing tube.

Dr. Todd Dorfman, a medical spokesman for the race, told The Denver Post that Lowe was assisted by two advanced life support bicycle teams helped, as well as two anesthesiologists who were running in the race, and an ambulance positioned at the intersection.

“If this patient ever had a chance of surviving, it would have been today,” said Dorfman.

University of Colorado athletics spokesman Dave Plati, who helped out with the race, said more than 50,816 people participated in the citizens portion of the race.
