Mesa County sheriff’s deputies discovered the bodies of a man and a woman Monday in a mobile home on the outskirts of Grand Junction, authorities say.
The bodies were found after family members of the couple got worried and called the sheriff’s office, said Carolyn Horton, a neighbor.
Norma Mestas, spokeswoman for the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, said she could not release the names of the two people or comment on the cause of death.
“It must have happened several days ago because the family hadn’t heard from them for quite some time,” Horton said.
Jack Nilson, 77, who lives across the street, said he hasn’t seen the couple for about a week, which is unusual.
Nilson said he often sees the woman going to her work as a waitress or the man going to his construction job.
“It’s really surprising that something like this happened,” he said.
The residents of the home have two grown children, a son in the Army and a daughter who is at college, Nilson said. The couple often go fishing, and the woman has a part-time job arranging flowers.
Authorities found two guns in the mobile home, he said.
Horton said there was crime scene tape all around the mobile home and that investigators from the sheriff’s office and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation were there.
“It’s pretty much a mystery what happened,” she said. “It’s rather scary.”
