Getting your player ready...

Notes, quotes and novelty items. …

At the moment, the name isn’t significant. It’s Chance Blackmon’s area code that makes him an intriguing figure.

Blackmon, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound wideout, is from Tatum, Texas. And he has orally committed to play at CU.

If getting a lone player from the Lone Star State doesn’t sound like major news, it represents a step forward for Dan Hawkins, whose 2007 recruiting class didn’t include a single player from Texas.

Coaches aren’t allowed to comment on recruits, but Hawkins did acknowledge that his staff is gaining traction in the race for all that Texas talent. The addition of new offensive line coach Jeff Grimes, a Texas native, has helped. But more than anything, says Hawkins, it’s a matter of time taking its course.

“It’s one of those places that’s really steeped in tradition,” Hawkins said. “Going back the second year, guys get a little more familiar with you. They understand who you are and what you’re about, and that obviously helps facilitate things. That’s a big deal. That’s football central down there.” …

Talk to enough people around the CU program and you come away with the distinct impression that Cody Hawkins, the coach’s son, is the most talented quarterback on campus. Not that his dad is going to say that. Said Hawkins, when asked if Cody felt like he should be The Man after redshirting last year, “They all do. They all should. We tell all the incoming guys, I want them to prepare like they’re that guy, and then we’ll make a determination once we get there. They need to think in their minds that they’re going to play and they’re going to be a main cog, an important part of the thing.” …

Checked out CU’s new uniforms Saturday at Folsom Field. The early reviews? Two thumbs up. They don’t include any powder blue, they don’t look anything like Oregon’s uniforms, and they figure to have more than two wins in them. …

According to Fox Sports Rocky Mountain, the finale of the Rockies’ seven-game winning streak attracted a season- high 5.1 rating and an 8 share, meaning 70,000 metro-area homes were tuned in. Moral to the numbers: The town isn’t the problem; the team is the problem. When the Rockies are watchable, fans will watch. …

It’s the seventh-inning stretch at Coors Field, so sing along with me, sports fans. “Root, root, root for the home team, if they don’t win it’s a sham.” …

Still not sold on the effect of the Coors Lite humidor? Then you didn’t see Thursday night’s game. Todd Helton hit a ball to left in the eighth inning that would have been five rows back in the late 1990s. It might have reached the warning track. …

By the way, I was going to write a really cool note here, but A-Rod yelled, “I got it!” …
