In attempting to create a veteran bench, the Rockies found themselves with old players instead of players of old.
A few weeks after severing ties with one-time elite pinch-hitter John Mabry, the Rockies designated outfielder Steve Finley for assignment today to clear a roster spot for promising Triple-A slugger Sean Barker. The Rockies have 10 days to trade or release Finley.
Finley played as advertised defensively, showing plenty of range in center field. However, he couldn’t get on track at the plate, hitting .181 in 94 at-bats with one home run and two RBIs.
With the promotion of Ryan Spilborghs, who took Mabry’s roster spot, Finley became the odd man out. Spilborghs can play all three outfield positions and has shown a knack thus far for hitting off the bench. The Rockies signed Finley to a $1 million contract at the beginning of spring training. They are required to pay the remainder of the deal, less any salary he would receive if he returns to the big leagues with another team.
Barker, who turned 27 last month, hit .333 with five home runs and 30 RBIs in 45 games for the Sky Sox.
