FORT CARSON, Colo.—The soldier with the unlikely name of a movie soldier hero was already in trouble before he allegedly stole an Army truck last week and was arrested in Kansas.
Pvt. Anthony Rambo, 19, was facing charges for alleged marijuana possession and theft before he took an Army Humvee and trailer and headed east on Tuesday.
He talked his way past a Colorado deputy but a report was sent to Fort Carson and Rambo was stopped 30 miles later in Goodland, Kansas.
Rambo had gone absent without leave for three weeks in April and was arrested in California, the Gazette reported.
He went to California after being charged with using his roommate’s debit card to pay for more than $800 in charges ranging from hamburgers and car washes to gasoline and movie tickets.
On May 16 he allegedly was found with marijuana in his possession. On May 25, he was caught after allegedly stealing a Hewlett-Packard computer and eight Xbox games from the army post exchange.
Subsequently he was put under close watch, required to report to his sergeant every two hours.
On Monday, he walked into an Army parking lot, grabbed a truck and gunned it through the gate, the Gazette said. The truck was immediately reported missing as was Rambo when he failed to report.
But the post didn’t tie Rambo to the Humvee theft until he was stopped by a Kit Carson County sheriff’s deputy near Burlington.
Rambo’s latest mission ended in the El Paso County jail, where he’s held pending a military hearing to determine whether there’s enough evidence to court-martial him on any of eight crimes.
Sylvester Stallone made the name Rambo famous in three movies about a soldier with commando skills that made him virtually unstoppable. A fourth movie is set for release later.
