The three Craig men who died when their vehicle plunged off a cliff two weeks ago were legally intoxicated and had been observed buying alcohol at a liquor store and drinking in a bar in the hours before the crash.
But Craig Police Chief Walter Vanatta said investigators for his department and the Colorado State Patrol have not been able to determine why the men’s Jeep went off a 125-foot cliff when it was traveling only 12 mph and was in control.
Investigators believe Waylon Owens-Plantiko, 28, was driving when the accident occurred. Toxicology tests showed he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.188, which is 2.3 times the legal limit.
Passenger David Johnston, 32, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.200, and passenger Jaron Green, 31, had a 0.244 level.
