Soccer star Kylee Hanavan from Metro State was voted the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in Division II. The prestigious Honda Sports Award is based on the results of national balloting among Division II and Division III schools.
Hanavan helped lead Metro State to NCAA national championships in 2004 and 2006. She is just the second soccer player to earn the award in its 20-year history.
Texans dominate Aspen junior golf event
Kramer Hickok of Plano, Texas, shot a final-round 72 to finish at 4-over-par 217 to win the boys division at the American Junior Golf Association Junior All-Star at Aspen on the Aspen Golf Club course.
Casey Grice of College Station, Texas, finished at 9-over 225 to win the girls division.
Rams will wear throwback uniforms
The Colorado State football team will celebrate its 50th anniversary by wearing throwback uniforms for the Rams’ home opener Sept. 8 against California. The school changed its name from Colorado A&M to Colorado State – and the team took the name Rams – in 1957. The jerseys will be green with white and gold sleeve stripes, similar to the design worn in 1957. The helmets will be green with white numbers on the sides.
Northern Colorado catcher John Ray signed a free-agent contract with the San Francisco Giants.
The World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters will hold the Mile High Fireworks in the Rockies bench press and dead lift championships at Mullen High School on June 30. Check for more information.
