GREELEY, Colo.—Two people died in a two-car collision southeast of Greeley and the driver of one vehicle fled, leaving a seriously injured passenger behind in his damaged car, the State Patrol said.

Troopers said Martin Morado, 45, of Greeley left the scene after the car he was driving ran through a stop sign and collided with a station wagon Wednesday night. Greeley police arrested him Thursday at North Colorado Medical Center, where he had sought treatment, police spokeswoman Joe Tymkowych said.

He was being held on suspicion of vehicular homicide while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs; vehicular homicide—reckless driving; and leaving the scene of an accident involving death, according to an arrest affidavit.

Two people in the station wagon were killed. They were identified as Monte Davenport, 61, of Eaton, and Sandra Davenport, age 60 also of Eaton. Trooper Ryan Sullivan said he did not know their relationship.

A passenger in Morado’s car, SanJuana Morado, 45, of Greeley, was taken to North Colorado Medical Center, Sullivan said. Her relationship to the driver was not immediately clear.

Sullivan said alcohol is suspected as a contributor to the collision.

Sullivan said Martin Morado made his way to his home after the collision and then took off in a pickup, which was later recovered in Evans, a town on Greeley’s southern edge.

Sullivan said it wasn’t immediately clear whether someone gave Morado a ride to his home.

Debbie Burk, a retired paramedic from Greeley, said she tried to help the people in the station wagon but couldn’t get into the vehicle.

“I kept trying to pull them out so that I could give them CPR, but I couldn’t open the doors,” Burk told the Greeley Tribune in Thursday’s editions. “I thought if only I could get five minutes, I could save their lives.”

Burk said she and her daughter, Sherissa Martin, 14, were on an errand when they came upon the wreckage.

Sherissa said she checked on SanJuana Morado but could not get her to respond.

“I kept trying to talk to her, but she would not talk back,” she said.

Court records show Martin Morado has a history of driving offenses. He pleaded guilty in 1991 and in 1997 to driving while under the influence, and he pleaded guilty in 1995 to felony possession and sale of a controlled substance.
