Waiting is hard for the family of a man who has not been seen since Saturday morning when he was swimming in Chatfield Reservoir.

“They don’t have any answers,” Christina Rodriquez said Monday of rescuers looking for her brother-in-law, Jose Luis Cano, 29.

Rodriquez said Cano, whom she described as “really nice, friendly,” had gone Saturday to Chatfield with his boss to relax, have fun and cool off on a hot day.

Known to his family and friends as Pepe, Cano – who is considered a good swimmer – was in water below his chest when he was last seen.

Littleton Fire Rescue divers searched for Cano on Saturday and Sunday in the northeast portion of the reservoir near the dam tower.

On Sunday night, the incident was turned over to state park rangers and the Douglas and Jefferson county sheriff’s offices.

Rangers swept the reservoir Monday with sonar.

Rodriquez said Cano’s boss told her the two men swam in the reservoir’s swimming area and then decided to go boating.

The men were near the dam when Cano’s boss got out of the boat to use the restroom, Rodriquez said. Cano’s boss looked back twice and saw Cano was in the water near the boat. When he returned, Cano’s belongings were there but he was gone.

Rodriquez and her husband, Alejandro, were at the reservoir throughout the weekend, and visited again Monday morning with the Mexican consul.

For more than three years, Cano had remodeled homes in the United States.

“He sent money home every week as soon as he was paid,” Christina Rodriquez said.

Home is Mexico City, where his family – including his wife and 5-year-old daughter – lives.

“His wife has called us all day every day,” Rodriquez said. “His sisters are waiting for an answer like us.”
