Larimer County – Mosquitoes trapped in Fort Collins and Loveland tested positive for West Nile virus on Tuesday, according to county health officials.
The mosquitoes were collected June 19 and are the first to test positive in Colorado this year, officials said.
In the week since the mosquitoes were trapped, the bugs in the area have doubled, county health officials warned.
Residents are advised to wear repellent when outdoors, wherever and whenever mosquitoes are active.
West Nile virus is a disease transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can lead to very serious illness and in some cases, to chronic disability and death.
Officials said there are no confirmed reports of West Nile in humans in Colorado this year.
