Frontier Airlines’ Lynx Aviation turboprop operation has received federal clearance allowing it to begin selling tickets.

Lynx plans to start flying Sept. 5 with Q400 turboprop planes. It received a waiver from the U.S. Department of Transportation today allowing it to issue tickets in advance of receiving Federal Aviation Administration certification.

The waiver has come later than Frontier had hoped, and the start of flights also will be later than originally anticipated.

Frontier plans to announce Tuesday what cities Lynx will service. Cities including Wichita, Kan., and Billings, Mont., have been expected to get Lynx service. The turboprop operation is intended to allow Frontier to fly to mountain destinations such as Aspen and Vail, but the airline does not plan to announce those destinations among its first round of cities.
