A midweek Independence Day isn’t expected to deter holiday travel, AAA predicted.

In a holiday travel forecast released today, the group predicted that more people will travel for the holiday this year than ever before, despite the fact that Independence Day falls on a Wednesday. AAA is predicting that a record 41.1 million Americans will leave home this holiday week, which it defined as June 29 to July 8.

This projected traveler total is .08 percent higher than last year.

“Despite the Fourth of July falling in the middle of the week, our stats are showing that people are as determined as ever to take a trip,” Sandra Barnes, AAA Colorado’s Director of Travel, said in a statement.

“Additionally, the recent retreat of gasoline prices could be one of the factors that influences many Coloradans to travel,” Barnes said. The average gasoline price in Colorado has dropped 20 cents since hitting the all-time record of $3.34 per gallon for regular unleaded on May 24.

However, compared to last year, the average regular unleaded gasoline price is up 28 cents.

AAA’s Leisure Travel Index also showed that

  • Hotel rates nationally are up nearly 5 percent compared to last year for AAA-rated Three Diamond hotels.
  • In Colorado, average rates for Three Diamond hotels are up 32 percent, from $111 to $146.
  • Airfares have dropped considerably on average, 12 percent lower than Fourth of July 2006 nationally.
  • Car rental rates are down in Denver an average of 18 percent from $57 last year to $47 this year.
  • Nationally, car rental rates are up 3 percent.

“As usual, vacationers will benefit from making travel plans as early as possible to receive more travel options and often lower rates,” Barnes said.
