The annual Firecracker 50 is set to go off Wednesday with the biggest bang in its seven-year history. The traditional Independence Day mountain bike race in Breckenridge has added the 2007-08 USA Cycling Mountain Bike Marathon National Championships to its lineup this year, drawing the likes of Olympian Tinker Juarez to the 50-mile off-road course beginning and ending above 9,500 feet. Kicking off the Independence Day parade with an 11 a.m. start, the race traditionally attracts thousands of spectators to the downtown starting line before riders tackle a grueling race course over two 25-mile loops with a total of 10,800 feet of climbing in Breck’s backcountry. Open category winners will be crowned national champions in the marathon discipline. The Firecracker 50 also offers several non-championship categories for juniors, beginners, sport and team divisions. There still is time to register by visiting Great Adventure Sports at City Market Plaza in Breckenridge between 5-9 p.m. today. Or sign up on race day at Carter Park in Breckenridge from 8:30-11 a.m.
