Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson was put on the 15-day disabled list for the third time this season, sidelined Tuesday because of a sore back.
The 43-year-old left-hander said he doesn’t believe the injury is career-threatening.
“That hasn’t even been part of the conversation,” Johnson said. “I think when you’ve been around as long as I have, you manage whatever comes across.”
Johnson is 4-3 with a 3.81 ERA this year. The plan calls for 10 days of rest and treatment, after which the injury will be re-evaluated.
Mets: Right-hander Pedro Martinez threw a simulated game at the team’s complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Martinez, who had rotator cuff surgery last fall, threw 50 pitches in three innings of work.
“It is a step in the right direction,” manager Willie Randolph said. “The schedule for the next move is pending.”
Phillies: Right-hander Jon Lieber will undergo season-ending surgery Friday to repair a ruptured tendon in his left foot. Lieber was 3-6 with a 4.73 ERA.
Cardinals: Right-hander Chris Carpenter, in his first rehab start for Class-A Palm Beach (Fla.), allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits in 1 1/3 innings. Carpenter, who underwent surgery May 8 to remove bone spurs from his elbow, could rejoin the rotation after the all-star break.
Mariners: Catcher Kenji Johjima left Seattle’s game against the Kansas City Royals in the second inning after being hit in the right wrist area by a pitch while behind the plate.
Giants: Infielder Rich Aurilia (neck) was activated.
Devil Rays: Right-hander Juan Salas was reinstated from the restricted list after he served a 50-game suspension for violating baseball’s drug-testing program. He was sent to Triple-A Durham (N.C).
