The winner: Joan Kenyon, Grand Junction
This little log house is in Galeton, north of Greeley. It was named for one of the founding fathers, but now it will be remembered for my daughter’s wedding on June 23. What a nice, quiet place for a wedding.

The log cabin is actually a shelter house in Pearl Park. I grew up in the Galeton area, lived east of Galeton where my grandparents homesteaded on dryland, and graduated from Galeton High School; I still farm in the Gill/Galeton area to this day – some 60-plus years later! Here’s some history on the place: N.V. Carney donated the land and named the park for his daughter, Pearl. Carney’s house was located south of the park and west of Galeton Community Church, and the park is just across the street to the west of this church. Carney operated the grocery store in Galeton from about 1915 to 1935, and then he sold it to Herschel Dillard’s father, Dick. Herschel and his wife, Jean, operated the store for many, many years after that. The Dillards also had a post office located in the back of the store, and they were good friends of my mother, father and myself. The Dillards later sold the store in the late 1990s/early 2000s and it is now a cafe. Pearl Park is the only park in Galeton and was a favorite place to have Sunday church picnics back in the day; in fact, my kids remember having church picnics there in the late 1970s and 1980s.
