Fort Carson – One worker died and a second worker was critically injured Monday when a concrete beam being held aloft by a crane crashed into the walls of a building under construction, Fort Carson officials said.

The names of the Mortensen Construction employees were not released. The men were building the headquarters for a brigade moving from Fort Hood, Texas.

Two other workers were injured, but they were in good condition at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs.

The accident is being investigated by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration as well as Fort Carson officials, according to post spokeswoman Dee McNutt.

Eight construction workers were present during the 12:50 p.m. accident. One of the workers had to be rescued by firefighters from atop a wall.

Over the next two to three years, 10,000 soldiers are expected to move to Fort Carson, bringing the number of active-duty soldiers at the mountain post to nearly 25,000.
