Willie “Little Lett” Clark, appeared in U.S. District Court for a preliminary hearing today, but the case was put off for a week to give his new attorney time to prepare a defense.

Clark, 24, is facing federal drug-trafficking charges, but police sources have said he is connected to the fatal shooting of Denver Broncos player Darrent Williams.

However, Clark has not been charged with any crime related to Williams’ death.

Clark’s mother declined to answer questions about her son’s case when reached outside the courtroom. During the brief appearance, she told her son she loved him from her seat in the back of the courtroom.

Clark’s attorney, Alaurice Tafoya-Modi, said she could not yet make a statement on his behalf.

Last week, federal authorities arrested Clark just as he was released from prison where he was serving time for violating the conditions of his parole.

Denver police have only officially called Clark a “person of interest” in the Williams case, but sources say he was one of three men in a white Chevrolet Tahoe that rode alongside Williams’ limousine when the shots were fired.
