Outlaws trade for San Francisco defenseman

The Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse acquired defenseman Trey Whitty from the San Francisco Dragons in a trade Wednesday, giving up attacker Hunter Lochte in the exchange.

Whitty, a 2005 draft pick of the Boston Cannons, recorded 22 ground balls and had one assist in 12 games for the Dragons last season. He has yet to play this season.

“We made this trade to bolster our defense,” Outlaws general manager and coach Brian Reese said.

Indiana prep lineman commits to Wyoming

Kyle Magnuson, a 6-foot-7, 306-pound offensive tackle at Concord Community High School in Elkhart, Ind., has orally committed to play football for Wyoming as part of the Cowboys’ 2008 recruiting class.

Magnuson helped the Concord Minutemen advance to the Indiana Class 4A championship game in a 14-1 season last year. He also received scholarship offers from Bowling Green and Toledo and attracted interest from Indiana, Purdue, Penn State and Marshall.

Adams State punter preseason All-American

Street & Smith’s is the second national magazine to name Adams State punter Wayne Durham to its preseason Division II All-America team. Lindy’s previously gave the honor to the junior, who averaged 44 yards per punt last season. Durham and Chadron (Neb.) State running back Danny Woodhead, the 2006 Harlon Hill Trophy recipient as the nation’s top Division II player, were the only Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference players to receive first-team honors from Street & Smith’s.

Quarterfinals set at Match Play Championship

Drew Stoltz of Fort Collins Country Club is the top remaining seed to survive two rounds at the Colorado Golf Association’s Match Play Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club and advance to today’s quarterfinals. The No. 3 seed and 2004 CGA Stroke Play champion defeated Kary Kaltenbacher of Glenmoor Country Club 5 and 3 in the afternoon round of 16 to make the quarterfinals.

Stoltz will face last year’s runner-up, Zen Brown of Indian Tree Golf Course and Colorado State. Brown ousted Walter Koelbel of Cherry Hills Country Club 4 and 2.

Elizabeth Kresock of Pinehurst Country Club won the Colorado Women’s Golf Association Junior Stroke Play Championship at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club, shooting a final-round 78 for a three-round, 17-over-par 233 total. Runner-up Brooke Collins of Omni Interlocken Resort finished three strokes behind.

Eagles newcomer has European experience

The Central Hockey League champion Colorado Eagles signed forward Dave Iannazzo, a former St. Cloud State star who played the past two seasons in Europe, scoring 62 goals in 105 games for teams in Amsterdam and Wales.
