Los Angeles – LaDainian Tomlinson won four trophies at the ESPY Awards on Wednesday night, including male athlete of the year for his record-setting season with the San Diego Chargers.

Tomlinson defeated LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, Wimbledon champion Roger Federer and Tiger Woods for athlete of the year.

James and comedian Jimmy Kimmel co-hosted the 15th annual show honoring the year’s best sports moments and athletes at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre. It airs Sunday at 7 p.m. MDT on ESPN.

Tomlinson also won best NFL player, record-breaking performance, and the Like Nothing Else award. The NFL MVP scored 31 touchdowns and 186 points, both league records, and rushed for 1,875 yards.

Prep hoopsters win national honors

Basketball players Kevin Love, who will attend UCLA, and Connecticut recruit Maya Moore were honored as national high school athletes of the year.

Love averaged 33.6 points, 17 rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots last season, helping Lake Oswego (Ore.) High to its third consecutive state title game appearance. His father, Stan, starred at Oregon and played in the NBA.

Moore led Collins Hill High in Suwanee, Ga., to an undefeated season and its third consecutive Georgia Class 5A state championship. The 6-foot senior, who helped the team compile a 125-3 record as a four-year varsity starter, averaged 25.5 points and 12.1 rebounds last season.

Argentina blanks Mexico in Copa

Tournament favorite Argentina advanced to the final of the Copa America, beating Mexico 3-0 in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, on goals by Gabriel Heinze, Lionel Messi and Juan Roman Riquelme. Argentina plays defending champion Brazil on Sunday.

Michael Bradley scored in the 107th minute, and the United States rallied past Uruguay 2-1 to advance to the quarterfinals of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Toronto. The United States, seeking its first title, plays Saturday against Austria, which defeated Gambia 2-1.

Serena Williams is pulling out of the United States’ Fed Cup semifinal against Russia in Stowe, Vt., this weekend because she injured herself during Wimbledon. The eight-time Grand Slam singles champion will be replaced on the U.S. roster by Meilen Tu.

Former Colorado State star Becky Hammon scored 10 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter in her return from a sprained foot, lifting the San Antonio Silver Stars past the host Phoenix Mercury 87-77 in WNBA play.

Katie Douglas scored 17 points to lift the visiting Connecticut Sun to a 76-63 victory over the Seattle Storm.

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Aaron Fike and his fiancée, Cassandra Davidson, a crew member, were suspended indefinitely from NASCAR competition after being arrested over the weekend on drug charges.

Duke sophomore center Brian Zoubek will be sidelined for at least eight weeks after surgery to repair a broken bone in the basketball player’s left foot.

Former Duke lacrosse player Collin Finnerty, cleared of false rape charges after being sidelined from the sport for more than a year, will transfer to Loyola of Maryland and play for the Greyhounds next season.

Andy Roberts beat Mark Harrell 3 and 2 in the first round of match play at the U.S. Public Links Championship in Wheaton, Ill., becoming the first No. 64 seed to upset No. 1 since 2002. Highlands Ranch residents Derek Tolan and Riley Andrews failed to advance to match play.
