Change could do wonders

Concerned over having different team names and mascots for men’s and women’s sports, Arkansas Tech is considering doing away with the nicknames Wonder Boys and Golden Suns. The school also is worried the name Wonder Boys might be hurting recruiting. “It’s one of those things that has been kind of a constant theme on our campus every few years,” said Sam Strasner, an assistant to the university spokesperson. The school, which is considering Comets, Copperheads, Sharks and Terrapins as alternatives, cited concern about connotations of the term Wonder Boy. “These connotations include slurs about an individual’s manhood or race, and the slurs have been used against Tech when recruiting,” the school said in a statement.

Fashionable debut on tap

The Los Angeles Galaxy is getting new threads for David Beckham’s debut. When the international soccer star, already a fashion plate, dons his Galaxy garb for the first time, he’ll be fitted in new team colors. The Galaxy is switching from its green and gold uniforms, retaining the gold but making navy and white the new primary colors. Beckham and his teammates will wear the new outfits when he makes his debut in an exhibition game against Chelsea FC on July 21 in Carson, Calif. The uniform change will be the first in the 12-year history of the MLS team. A new logo will be featured on the uniforms, a “quasar” crest woven on the jerseys.

So then, it’s a Chablis?

“We said at the start of the stage that if we win, it’s a Chablis. And if we lose it’s a Chablis anyway.”

Win, place and doe

Oh, deer, this one turned out to be one wild race! Railbirds at Rockingham Park in Salem, N.H., were treated to quite a sight in the eighth harness race last Friday – a deer that jumped onto the track and followed the horses down the stretch, WVIT-TV reported. Just as quickly, the deer hopped the fence again and disappeared into nearby woods.
