Denver’s sports-talk radio market will get more crowded on July 23 when 1510 AM signs on as Mile High Sports Radio. The station, currently KCKK, will the country-western format for sports.

As expected, Tim Brown, CEO of NRC Broadcasting, the owners of KCKK, is selling the outlet to Golden-based Medina Communications, pending FCC approval. For now the companies will operate under a local marketing agreement (LMA).

Tim Neverett will host mornings, 6-9 a.m. (as he did previously at KLZ). Mark Knudson will host afternoons, 2-6 p.m.

“There’s enough room for the programming,” Neverett said. “Lots of advertisers have told us they’d prefer an alternative. Competition is good for everyone.”
The station plans a “soft launch,” with syndicated Sporting News Radio debuting on 1510 on July 23, then Neverett launching on July 25. Starting July 30, former Major League pitcher Knudson will begin his afternoon broadcast from Broncos training camp with a co-host to be named.
Kevin Medina, CEO of Mile High Sports declined to disclose details of the sale.
As distinct from the sports-talk competition (ie. The Fan), Medina said, “We’re going more for the multimedia approach.” Mile High Sports magazine will celebrate its five-year anniversary in August, the publication sends subscribers daily email with fresh editorial content daily, a spinoff television show on Altitude and Comcast are also successful.

“There is a lot of advertising inventory we can package together,” Medina said. One sales staff will sell print, radio and television.

Medina also said the radio outlet will aim for a younger audience.

“The first order of business is to work with our magazine clients, get them going on the airwaves.”
