DENVER—Construction of a new national cemetery in the Pikes Peak region appears closer to reality than ever before.

On Friday, Veterans Administration officials met with Colorado congressional staff and pledged to cooperate in building a new national cemetery in the area, the Pueblo Chieftain reported. House members earlier passed legislation to establish the new cemetery, but the VA had opposed the plan.

The VA said there were two national cemeteries in Colorado, and the new one would be too close to them.

But William Tuerk, VA undersecretary for memorial affairs, met with congressional and Senate staff to signal the department’s willingness to support the initiative.

The new cemetery will be built after the VA completes the nine cemeteries that are currently authorized to be built around the country.
