LA VETA, Colo.—The San Luis and Rio Grande Scenic Railroad is looking for other sources of water here for its steam engine after a water commissioner’s ruling shut off service last week.
The ruling came after Water Commissioner Doug Brgoch discovered the town was selling the train water that was meant for agricultural use only. Town trustees were scheduled to meet to discuss other options for supplying water to the train.
A seven-day grace period allowed the steam engine to run on La Veta water this weekend.
Railroad spokeswoman Skye Ridley said the railroad has secured use of a tank car in case no solution is found before the following weekend. Ridley said the tank car will hold 20,000 gallons, or enough for 20 trips from La Veta to Alamosa.
The railroad is waiting to invest in a permanent solution until the board meets with train officials Tuesday, Ridley said.
