Rising water temperature has prompted the Colorado Division of Wildlife to request a voluntary angling closure on the Yampa River through the town of Steamboat Springs to protect trout populations.

The stipulated area is from the upstream boundary of the Chuck Lewis State Wildlife Area to the west city limit boundary. DOW will continue to monitor river conditions and inform the public when satisfactory conditions return.

The Yampa is flowing at only one-fifth the normal level and water temperature has exceeded 70 degrees, causing both heat stress and a deficit in dissolved oxygen. Additional stress from angling could result in fish disease and death. For more information, call 970-871-2855.
