Aurora – Police report that crime in the city has declined through the first half of 2007.
In a midyear snapshot of crime statistics for 2007 released Wednesday, the Aurora Police Department reported that between Jan. 1 and June 30 major crime fell 4.9 percent, with violent crime down 7.6 percent.
Property crimes were down 4.5 percent, the department’s report stated.
In Aurora for the first six months of this year, murder was down 20 percent, motor-vehicle theft was down 15.6 percent and robbery was down 7.9 percent, the report stated.
In addition, the department has for the first time released statistics on gang-related activity.
Analysis of the past six months showed that crimes that fall under the category of “gang-related activity” accounted for 7.5 percent of the city’s violent crimes.
In February, Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman estimated that about 16 percent of that city’s crimes are gang-related.
