Denver – Police responding to the call of a shooting on the 3900 block of Lowell Boulevard on Wednesday afternoon found an elderly woman who had been shot to death and took a man into custody, said Detective John White, a Denver police spokesman.
The relationship between the suspect and victim was unclear and neither have been identified by police. The man was arrested at the scene without incident, White said.
Neighbors were surprised to hear that an elderly woman had been shot, because they said they believed the woman who owned the home no longer lived there.
“If that’s her, it’s a surprise to me,” said next-door neighbor Sam Ortiz. “All I knew was that they had taken her to a (nursing) home.”
Ortiz said a nephew of the owner cared for the house, but he did not think anyone was living there full time.

Scottish soccer team’s shoes late to practice
Their shoes were no-shows.
The Celtic soccer team traveled from Scotland to America this week to start training for the MLS All-Star Game. The players’ shoes showed up a little late.
The start of their workout Tuesday was delayed by about 45 minutes while the team waited for the shoes to reach the practice field. Baggage handlers at Denver International Airport couldn’t locate them when the team arrived Monday night.
“You Americans go through this much?” midfielder Scott Brown joked as Celtic FC waited for practice to begin. “We’d like to get on with this.”
For good reason. Temperatures were in the 90s and climbing – not exactly what the Scottish Premier League champions are used to back home.
“There’s no sun in Europe whatsoever. I’ve been everywhere in Europe this summer and there is no sun at this time of year,” Celtic manager Gordon Strachan said. “I wake up this morning and it’s 100 degrees.”
Celtic FC plays the MLS All-Star game at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park tonight.

Man pleads not guilty in arson tied to deaths
Derrick “Nicky” Johnson pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murder and arson charges stemming from an apartment fire that killed two people.
A trial date was not set but Johnson will appear in El Paso District Court again in November for hearings, prosecutor Denise Minish said.
Johnson is charged with setting a fire that destroyed 135 units in the Castle West apartments on Jan. 16 to get revenge on the mother of his child for breaking up with him. She was staying with a resident at the apartments when they burned down.
