GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A 2-year-old Clifton boy who died at a hospital may have been the victim of child abuse, authorities said.
The boy was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital with undisclosed injuries Monday evening. Mesa County deputies were sent to the hospital about midnight when hospital staff members called to say they were concerned about the severity of the boy’s injuries, said Heather Gierhart, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s department.
The child died about 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Gierhart would not discuss the nature of the boy’s condition other than to say he was suffering from multiple, serious injuries. She said he was not taken to the hospital by ambulance, but declined to be more specific.
The child’s name was not released.
A second child was taken from the Clifton residence and placed in the care of the Mesa County Department of Human Services.
The case remained under investigation.
No arrests had been made.
